Recently I heard a Pickleball expert speak at my rotary club. I've been hearing more and more about this peculiar sport and was excited to learn more about it.

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport globally. 2 guys back in 1965 wanted to play a game of badminton, but only had ping pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball to work with. Since then, the sport has grown to over 10 million players all around the world!

Pickleball started out attracting the 55+ community but younger adults and teens are catching wind of this 2-4 person game.

Because the paddles are light, you are not supposed to grip them very tightly, and you can only play underhanded; injury prevalence is much less than other racket sports.

I asked Johan Middelthon, owner of P3 Pickleball and award winning pickleBall player, why he got into the sport and how its changed his life.

His first response was that he was a competitive soccer player but every time he played, his body would hurt. He took up pickleball because he could still be competitive in a sport that didn't flare up his joints like soccer did and he got the exercise he was looking for. Johan reports that many others say the same thing. This sport isn't as hard on the body.

Johan said that everyday he gets to hear about people's love of the sport. It brings together community and is one of the most accepting sports you can find. You can be a beginner showing up for the first time and people will welcome you with opened arms.

If you're looking for a low impact sport that gets you outside, connected with people, and moving; pickleball is highly recommended.
