"Hope is what keeps a man alive inside" - Shawshank Redemption
Life feels uncertain right now. Many are navigating stress around the economy, inflation, and the political climate, while others feel excited about change. No matter where you stand, there’s one thing we all share—the need for resilience, adaptability, and hope.
Stress and uncertainty are nothing new. History shows us that we are capable of overcoming even the most difficult times—but how we move through them depends largely on our mindset.
The Power of Perspective: A Study on Mindset
Imagine you’re in a room with a group of people, and you’ve been given a simple challenge: jump as high as you can.
The competition is straightforward—whoever jumps the highest wins. You go for it, hitting your personal best.
Now, a twist. You’re given a weighted backpack and asked to jump again. This time, two groups receive different instructions:
Group 1 is told: "This backpack will weigh you down. You won’t be able to jump as high, but do your best."
Group 2 is told: "Yes, the backpack is heavy, but with your determination and inner strength, you can jump even higher."
The results?
Group 1 struggled. Their jumps were lower than before.
Group 2—against all logic—jumped higher than in their first round.
What made the difference? Their belief.
The lesson is clear: What we are told, and what we tell ourselves, impacts our reality. If we are constantly surrounded by messages of fear, doubt, and limitation, we begin to believe them. But when we surround ourselves with encouragement, optimism, and resilience, we rise higher—often beyond what we thought was possible.
For example, let's look at the tariffs being placed on Canadian and Mexican imports. While some may see this as a good thing, others are terribly worried about what this will do to the cost of those goods state side as well as the international relationships with our neighbors. This stress, uncertainty, and even those who are excited are all behaving in a certain way as a result of their mindset and emotions.
Try this simple mantra if you are finding yourself struggling:
"Even though I feel uncertain in these times, I am strong, smart, and resourceful. With these strengths I can adapt, pivot, and find creative empowering ways to overcome this."
You Are Not Stuck—You Are Adapting
Change is never easy, and stress can feel overwhelming. But you are not powerless. You’ve adapted before, and you’ll do it again.
Feeling stuck? Remember, growth often happens in the most uncomfortable moments.
Surrounded by negativity? Choose who and what influences your mindset.
Worried about the future? Focus on what you can control today.
Hope is not about ignoring reality—it’s about knowing that you are strong enough to handle whatever comes next.
