Three Signs You Are Burning Out But Still Functioning:

You’re still getting things done. You’re showing up, pushing through, and even smiling when needed. From the outside, you might even look like you’ve got it all together. But inside?
It’s a different story.
When I say that I've been there. I can tell you with deep empathy that yes, I know this feeling all too well. As I reflect back to those times, here were some things that I didn't realize was burnout:
3 (ok, 4) sneaky signs you're burning out—even if you're still “high-functioning”:
1. You've lost passion for what you used to love. You used to light up talking about your work, your family, and your hobbies. Now? It’s all just…meh. You’re going through the motions, but the spark is gone.
2. You have a very short fuse. Snapping at people you care about, dreading small tasks, or feeling irritated by things that never used to bother you? Yep. That’s not just stress—that’s burnout whispering (or shouting) at you.
I remember a patient of mine even stating in an email that they could tell that I was "frustrated" with them. My patience and bedside manner went out the window which was completely unlike me.
3. You're more negative and low than usual. You find yourself focusing on what’s wrong, not what’s right, and everything that comes out of your mouth is negative.
Again, I was there. My "positive-polly" self turned into "negative Nancy". In fact, there was a moment where I even said to someone that I just want to go silent. Which being the type A, driven woman that I am, lead to a self-inflicted 10-Day Vipassana Silent Meditation. Which, by the way, was a game changer ....that and the bumpy times of the "pandemic" which demanded a time for change.
Burnout is not a weakness. It's a symptom that say its time to change the way you are living your life.
4. You don’t really care anymore… but you still keep going. This one’s the kicker. You’re drained, detached, maybe even a little numb—but somehow you’re still fighting.
That inner go-getter is still in there, pushing through… because that’s who you are. But she’s exhausted. She’s running on fumes. And it’s time—past time—to rest.
Here’s the truth: burnout doesn’t always look like crashing and burning. Sometimes it looks like keeping it all together… until you just can’t anymore.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can shift from surviving to thriving. You can reconnect with that strong, passionate, joyful version of yourself—without running yourself into the ground.
