There are two personal stories I want to share about facing fatigue and burnout—one tied to life in the clinic, and the other to triathlon.
It was after lunch. I had patients back-to-back, a full morning behind me, and I’d eaten at my desk while juggling emails, charting, research, and admin tasks. One of my patients looked at me and said, “You look really tired.”
Unfortunately, they were right.
I was dealing with brain fog, physical fatigue—and people were noticing.
That was the moment I decided to take a hard look at how I was living.
The missing piece?
EXERCISE.
I was barely getting 2,000 steps a day, glued to my to-do list, constantly pushing through the noise. Meanwhile, my body was screaming: “You’re sitting too much!”
So, I made a choice.
I made time.
I moved my schedule around and prioritized exercise.
Because if you don’t, life will pass you by—and months (even years) can go by before you realize nothing will change unless you make it a priority.
I started going to the Y and trying some group fitness classes—and before long, my afternoon patients were meeting a brand-new Dr. Lexi. I finally had ENERGY!
Fast forward to falling in love with triathlon.
I did my first half-ironman in 2020. Solo. No spectators. I call it “The Race of Stupid” in my keynotes because I had no clue how to fuel my body for endurance.
Let’s just say: you can’t train for a 70.3-mile race on celery, apples, and electrolytes alone. 🤦♀️
After experiencing heat exhaustion and muscle failure, I made two decisions:
Hire a coach who knew what they were doing.
Learn how to fuel my body as an endurance athlete.
My coach built me a plan—and I followed it almost to a T.
Then I dialed in my nutrition and hydration. The result? My second half-ironman was a massive success. I crossed the finish line with energy left in the tank. 🙌
So how does natural medicine boost your energy?
We take a whole-person approach.
Here are a few core principles from my energy-boosting protocol:
🔋 1. FUEL
Your body needs fuel to function—and it starts with food.
If you're crashing after lunch, look at what you’re eating. Lots of pasta or bread? You could be dealing with grain brain or a sugar crash.
Fatigue by late morning? Too much coffee may be draining your natural reserves.
Skipping meals or overdoing intermittent fasting? You might have low blood sugar.
💧 2. HYDRATION
Why don’t we swim during an electrical storm?Because electricity travels FAST through water.
Now think: what’s electric in our bodies? Our brains and nerves.
If we want them to fire quickly and efficiently, we must stay hydrated.
Dehydration is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to address fatigue.
🏃♀️ 3. MOVEMENT
Movement is life. You don’t have to become a triathlete to get your steps in.
I’ve had patients start losing weight and feeling more energized just by walking their dog. Daily movement boosts circulation, mood, and energy.
😴 4. REST & RECOVERY
Often overlooked, rest is essential. We go, go, go—and forget the body needs time to pause.
That’s why things like painting, puzzles, prayer, walking in nature, and meditation are not just relaxing… they’re essential to our energy.
